COLANDER.

To all whom it may concern.-

Be it known that I, OEoILIn EOKERT, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Colanders, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to improvements in culinary utensils and particularly to such as are used in straining liquids from solids, of finely pulverized portions from those of larger size.

The principal object of the invention is to provide a colander, screen or sieve that can be conveniently handled with reference to other vessels as used in connection, the

supports of the colander or strainer being adjustably attached to the body, permitting them to be extended oppositely if desired.

A further purpose is to produce a colander in which the strainer or sieve elements are detachably engaged, thus permitting interchangeability of parts of different mesh or fineness.

Another aim is in the provision of a colander which can be cheaply constructed and conveniently used, the preferred embodiment ding substantially rectangular in plan and occupying less than the usual space.

These several objects are accomplished by the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereafter described and shown in the annexed drawing, forming part of this disclosure, and in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of an embodiment of the invention as resting upon its attached supports.

Figure 2 is a top plan view of the same.

Figure 3 is an end view thereof.

Figure at is a perspective sectional view, showing the supports as extended longitudi- .nally outward.

Devices of a similar character are almost universally circular in plan and concavoconvex in section, thus taking up considerable space, both when in use and when stored.

Such strainers are also formed with a fixed mesh and therefore if a finer or coarser degree of separation is required, recourse must be had to an implement of similar nature.

In the present invention an attempt has been made to decrease the space occupied and also to arrange the straining elements interchangeably.

In carrying out the invention a pair of segmental side plates are used, their chordal edges upward and their curved edge flanged inward as at 11, connecting bars 12 extending from one side to the other at the ends and central, lowermost portion, these bars maintaining the sides in fixed spaced relation.

A frame comprised of longitudinal elements 13, adapted to overlie the flanges, and cross pieces 14 arranged with reference to the bars 12, is curved in conformity with the interior of the side plates and secured fixedly to them, there being an open space 15 between the frame and flanges and bars of the sides.

A handle 16 is secured to one or both of the end bars 12 for convenience in operating the device.

Fixed in the sides 10, at their ends and near their upper edges, are pins 17 and 18, the former acting as pivots for the legs or supports 19, and the pins 18 are free to operate in slots 20 formed in the upper ends of the legs, these slots being shaped and proportioned to permit the legs to assume any essential upright position or to be swung on the pivots 17 to extend horizontally outward.

A sheet of wire gauze or equivalent strainer 21 is formed to suit the space 15 and can be entered or withdrawn in an obvious manner, thus enabling strainer plates of different meshes to be used.

The operation of the device is believed to be clear from the foregoing taken in connection with the drawing, and it will be seen that a convenient and practical colander has been disclosed.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

A colander comprising a hollow portable body having segmental sides, a handle fixed on the end of said body, means for holding the sides in fixed spaced relation, inturned flanges on the curved edges of said sides, an open frame fixed between said sides and spaced from said flanges, said frame having a cross bar at its center, a foraminous sheet removably engaged between said frame and flanges, and pairs of legs pivoted to said body at each end thereof, said legs being positioned normally vertical and capable of folding horizontally outward.
