Definitions
- the present invention relates in general to a gaming device, and more particularly to a gaming device having a primary or secondary game which includes a number of picks of selections and the selection outcomes determined based on a wager.
- Gaming machine manufacturers constantly strive to produce gaming machines that maximize enjoyment and excitement for players by incorporating familiar features in various ways in the games.
- Known gaming devices include triggering events which occur during the play of the base game of the gaming device. The triggering event temporarily stalls or halts the base game play and enables the player to enter a second, different type of game, which is the bonus game. The player plays one type of game in the bonus game, likely receives an award in the bonus game, and returns to the base game. There is, therefore, a need to combine in unique ways different types of games employed in different gaming machines into one game.
- a typical selection game used in a secondary or bonus game prompts and enables the player to pick one or more selections from a group of masked selections.
- the gaming device provides the player the awards associated with the selections picked by the player and the game ends.
- Reel games are also well-known types of games. It is well known that a plurality of reels can be employed in a bonus game as well as a base game. Reels in gaming devices are known to have a variety of different types of symbols, indicia or characters displayed on the reels. awards are typically associated with one or more symbols, and one or more combinations of symbols.
- Gaming device manufacturers have also made games where the maximum wager in the base game influences an outcome in a bonus game.
- An example of a method in which a wager in the base game is able to affect an outcome in the bonus game is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 6,186,894 in which in one embodiment the number of chances provided to the player to play the secondary event game is based on the number of paylines that the player has played on the main game or by the number of credits wagered on each payline.
- the present invention relates generally to a gaming device having a primary or base game and a secondary or bonus game wherein certain events and outcomes in the bonus game are based on the wager in the base game.
- the gaming device provides at least two different ways of simultaneously changing the bonus game based on the wager in the base game.
- the gaming device includes a primary game operable upon a wager by a player and a secondary game. At least one award is adapted to be provided to the player in the primary game.
- the secondary game includes at least two different features or types of features or functions which are changed if the player makes a designated wager in the primary game.
- the secondary game includes a plurality of different secondary game awards adapted to be provided to the player based on the changed types of features or functions. It should be appreciated that the changeable features or types of features or functions of a secondary game can be any suitable feature or function in the game if the player makes a designated wager in the primary game.
- the wager made by a player in the base game determines the number of picks of the selections provided to the player as well as the outcomes associated with at least one and preferably a plurality of the selections.
- the gaming device displays a plurality of masked selections. An outcome or award is associated with each selection.
- the gaming device provides the player a number of picks of the selections based on the credits bet or wagered in the base game. In one embodiment, the number of picks provided to the player of the selections is based on the number of credits wagered per payline of the base game. If, for example, the player bets two credits per payline which, in a fifteen-line game, would be thirty credits, the player receives two picks of the selections in the bonus game. If the player bets the maximum amount per payline in by the base game, the player receives the maximum number of picks of the selections. This correlation can be linear or non-linear.
- the bonus game includes a secondary display device which includes a symbol generator including one or more wheels, die, reels, set of reels or any other suitable device adapted to display generated symbols.
- the symbol generator is a plurality of reels which include a plurality of symbols on the reels.
- the bonus game in one embodiment includes a plurality of reels with symbol combinations resulting in more than one type of award or award component in addition to the plurality of selections described above. The number of picks of the selections and possible activations of the reels which are associated with the selections are both based on the wager made by the player in the base game.
- the awards associated with the selections provided to the player are limited to values and do not include activation of the reels of the bonus game. In one embodiment, if the player bets the maximum amount in the base game, the outcomes or awards associated with the selections are different from the outcomes or awards associated with the selections if the player wagered less than the maximum amount predetermined by the base game. In one embodiment, the selections provided to the player include one or more activations or spins of the set of reels only if the player bets the maximum amount in the base game.
- the game or the player is able to spin the reels on the secondary display device to achieve another outcome or win another award or another type of award associated with different types of symbols on the reels.
- the symbols on the reels represent parts or portions of an actual physical object such as any suitable merchandise or product able to be provided to the player as a product award.
- a plurality of symbols or a symbol combination must be generated to obtain the product award.
- Each symbol of the combination is displayed on one reel as a product award symbol. The reels move independently.
- a product award is provided to the player if the product award symbols line up along the same payline on the reels.
- the gaming device if the gaming device generates less than all of the product award symbols along a payline, the player is provided another type of award associated with the symbols.
- the product award symbols when not generated with the other product award symbols along the same payline, include a modifier of the award to be applied in the game, or, alternatively, in a later game. It should be appreciated that the reels may also include other symbols representing other types of awards such as values.
- the gaming device includes a base or primary game operable upon a wager by a player.
- the base game includes a plurality of reels and a plurality of paylines associated with the reels in a conventional manner.
- the gaming device Upon a suitable triggering event in the base game, the gaming device initiates a bonus or secondary game which includes a plurality of player selectable selections. At least one of the player selectable selections is associated with an award, such as credit values.
- the amount wagered per payline and the number of paylines wagered on independently determine at least two features or components of the bonus game, such as the number of picks of the player selectable selections awarded to the player, the value of an award modifier, (such as a multiplier) or the paytable employed.
- the gaming device determines the number of picks of the selections to provide to the player in the bonus game based on the amount wagered per payline in the base game. For example, when a player wagers two credits per payline in the base game, the player receives three picks of the player selectable selections in the bonus game. If the player wagers three credits per payline in the base game, the player receives five picks of the player selectable selections in the bonus game. It should be appreciated that the gaming device may provide the player with any suitable number of picks of the player selectable selections based on the number of credits wagered per payline.
- the gaming device when a player wagers on more selections in the base game, the gaming device provides the player with a greater number of picks of the selections. That is, as the wager per payline increases, the number of picks of the selections increases. In another embodiment, the number of picks of player selectable selections provided to the player is based, at least in part, on the number of paylines wagered on by the player in the base game.
- the value of an award modifier in the bonus game is based, at least in part, on the number of paylines selected and wagered on in the base game.
- a display device displays an award to a player based on at least one of the picked selections.
- the gaming device modifies the award credits or award value by a modifier determined, at least in part, on the number of paylines wagered in the base game. In one embodiment, when a player wagers on a greater number of paylines in the base game, the gaming device provides a modifier of a higher value.
- a gaming device includes twenty paylines. When the player selects or wagers on one of the paylines, upon a triggering event, the gaming device provides an award multiplier of one in the bonus game. When the player selects five of the paylines, the gaming device provides an award multiplier of two in the bonus game. When the player selects all twenty paylines, the gaming device provides an award multiplier of twelve in the bonus game. It should be appreciated that the gaming device may modify the award with any suitable award modifier.
- the gaming device in the second component of the game, includes a plurality of different paytables for the bonus game.
- the paytable employed by the gaming device in the bonus game is determined by the number of paylines which the player wagers on or selects. In one embodiment, if a player wagers on more paylines the gaming device employs a paytable with higher achievable awards. In one embodiment, the gaming device provides a plurality of paytables with different volatilities. In another embodiment, the gaming device enables the player to select the paytable if the player wagers a predetermined amount.
- the bonus game includes Paytable A, Paytable B and Paytable C, which are all different paytables. If a player wagers on one payline in the base game, the gaming device employs Paytable A in the bonus game. Likewise, if the player wagers on two paylines in the base game, the gaming device employs Paytable B in the bonus game. If a player wagers on all three paylines in the base game, the gaming device employs Paytable C in the bonus game.
- the bonus game includes a plurality of player selectable selections. The number of picks of the selections provided to the player is determined by the amount wagered per payline, as discussed above. The paytable employed in the secondary game determines the awards, values or outcomes which are associated with the selections. In one embodiment, the bonus game is the same, regardless of the number of lines wagered, but the paytables employed are different.
- the gaming device provides the player with a physical prize such as a token if a designated outcome is achieved.
- the token represents a predetermined number of credits in the gaming machine.
- the gaming device automatically distributes one or more tokens upon a game event or outcome. For example, a token can represent four quarters in a gaming machine using quarter value credits or twenty nickels in a gaming machine using nickel value credits.
- the processor calculates the number of tokens divisible into the total number of credits on the gaming machine and directs the hopper to dispense that number of tokens. In one embodiment, if the number of credits is not evenly divisible by the credit per token amount, the processor leaves the remaining credits on the gaming machine.

Abstract
A gaming device having a bonus game which is changed based on a wager in the base game. A wager in the base game determines if outcomes introducing other types of games into the bonus game are available to the player. In one embodiment, a plurality of masked player-selectable selections are presented to the player. A wager made by the player in the base game determines the number of picks of the selections provided to the player, and the wager determines the type of award or outcome associated with the selections. In one embodiment, a different type of game is introduced in the selection game such as a reel game. If the player wagers a predetermined amount, the gaming device provides an opportunity to spin the reels in the reel game. The symbols of the reel game, in one embodiment, represent portions of a product award which, if generated together along an active payline of the reels, is provided to the player. If less than all of the required combination of product award symbols occurs on the reels, another type of award, such as a multiplier, is associated with the individual product award symbols on the payline and is applied to other awards provided to the player.
Description
- This application is a continuation-in-part and claims the benefit of U.S. patent application Ser. No. 10/660,809, filed on Sep. 11, 2003, the entire contents of which are incorporated herein.
- A portion of the disclosure of this patent document contains material which is subject to copyright protection. The copyright owner has no objection to the photocopy reproduction by anyone of the patent document or the patent disclosure in exactly the form it appears in the Patent and Trademark Office patent file or records, but otherwise reserves all copyright rights whatsoever.
Known gaming devices include triggering events which occur during the play of the base game of the gaming device.
- An example of a well-known type of game is a selection game. A typical selection game used in a secondary or bonus game prompts and enables the player to pick one or more selections from a group of masked selections. When the player picks one or more of the assorted selections, the gaming device provides the player the awards associated with the selections picked by the player and the game ends.
An example of a method in which a wager in the base game is able to affect an outcome in the bonus game is disclosed in U.S. Pat. No. 6,186,894 in which in one embodiment the number of chances provided to the player to play the secondary event game is based on the number of paylines that the player has played on the main game or by the number of credits wagered on each payline.
- There is a continuing need to provide new and different games for wagering gaming machines.
- The present invention relates generally to a gaming device having a primary or base game and a secondary or bonus game wherein certain events and outcomes in the bonus game are based on the wager in the base game.
- In one embodiment of the present invention, the gaming device provides at least two different ways of simultaneously changing the bonus game based on the wager in the base game. In one embodiment, the gaming device includes a primary game operable upon a wager by a player and a secondary game. At least one award is adapted to be provided to the player in the primary game. The secondary game includes at least two different features or types of features or functions which are changed if the player makes a designated wager in the primary game. The secondary game includes a plurality of different secondary game awards adapted to be provided to the player based on the changed types of features or functions. It should be appreciated that the changeable features or types of features or functions of a secondary game can be any suitable feature or function in the game if the player makes a designated wager in the primary game.
- In one embodiment which includes player-selectable selections, the wager made by a player in the base game determines the number of picks of the selections provided to the player as well as the outcomes associated with at least one and preferably a plurality of the selections.
- In one embodiment of the present invention, the gaming device displays a plurality of masked selections. An outcome or award is associated with each selection. The gaming device provides the player a number of picks of the selections based on the credits bet or wagered in the base game.
- In one embodiment, the bonus game includes a secondary display device which includes a symbol generator including one or more wheels, die, reels, set of reels or any other suitable device adapted to display generated symbols. In one embodiment, the symbol generator is a plurality of reels which include a plurality of symbols on the reels. The bonus game in one embodiment includes a plurality of reels with symbol combinations resulting in more than one type of award or award component in addition to the plurality of selections described above. The number of picks of the selections and possible activations of the reels which are associated with the selections are both based on the wager made by the player in the base game.
- If in one embodiment the player bets or wagers less than the maximum amount for the base game, the awards associated with the selections provided to the player are limited to values and do not include activation of the reels of the bonus game. In one embodiment, if the player picks a selection having an associated spin of the reels, the game or the player is able to spin the reels on the secondary display device to achieve another outcome or win another award or another type of award associated with different types of symbols on the reels.
- In one embodiment, the symbols on the reels represent parts or portions of an actual physical object such as any suitable merchandise or product able to be provided to the player as a product award. In one embodiment, a plurality of symbols or a symbol combination must be generated to obtain the product award. Each symbol of the combination is displayed on one reel as a product award symbol. The reels move independently. A product award is provided to the player if the product award symbols line up along the same payline on the reels.
- In one embodiment of the present invention, if the gaming device generates less than all of the product award symbols along a payline, the player is provided another type of award associated with the symbols. In one embodiment, the product award symbols, when not generated with the other product award symbols along the same payline, include a modifier of the award to be applied in the game, or, alternatively, in a later game. It should be appreciated that the reels may also include other symbols representing other types of awards such as values.
- In another embodiment of the present invention, the gaming device includes a base or primary game operable upon a wager by a player. The base game includes a plurality of reels and a plurality of paylines associated with the reels in a conventional manner. Upon a suitable triggering event in the base game, the gaming device initiates a bonus or secondary game which includes a plurality of player selectable selections. At least one of the player selectable selections is associated with an award, such as credit values. The amount wagered per payline and the number of paylines wagered on independently determine at least two features or components of the bonus game, such as the number of picks of the player selectable selections awarded to the player, the value of an award modifier, (such as a multiplier) or the paytable employed.
- In one embodiment, in a first component of the game, the gaming device determines the number of picks of the selections to provide to the player in the bonus game based on the amount wagered per payline in the base game. In one embodiment, when a player wagers on more selections in the base game, the gaming device provides the player with a greater number of picks of the selections. That is, as the wager per payline increases, the number of picks of the selections increases. In another embodiment, the number of picks of player selectable selections provided to the player is based, at least in part, on the number of paylines wagered on by the player in the base game.
- In this embodiment, in a second component of the game, the value of an award modifier in the bonus game is based, at least in part, on the number of paylines selected and wagered on in the base game. In the bonus or secondary game, a display device displays an award to a player based on at least one of the picked selections. The gaming device modifies the award credits or award value by a modifier determined, at least in part, on the number of paylines wagered in the base game. In one embodiment, when a player wagers on a greater number of paylines in the base game, the gaming device provides a modifier of a higher value.
- For example, a gaming device includes twenty paylines.
- In another embodiment, in the second component of the game, the gaming device includes a plurality of different paytables for the bonus game. The paytable employed by the gaming device in the bonus game is determined by the number of paylines which the player wagers on or selects.
- In one embodiment, the bonus game includes Paytable A, Paytable B and Paytable C, which are all different paytables. In one embodiment, the bonus game includes a plurality of player selectable selections.
- In another embodiment of the present invention, the gaming device provides the player with a physical prize such as a token if a designated outcome is achieved. The token represents a predetermined number of credits in the gaming machine. In one embodiment, the gaming device automatically distributes one or more tokens upon a game event or outcome. For example, a token can represent four quarters in a gaming machine using quarter value credits or twenty nickels in a gaming machine using nickel value credits. In another embodiment, when a player presses the cash out button on a gaming machine having a balance of credits which is not a multiple of the predefined token value, the processor calculates the number of tokens divisible into the total number of credits on the gaming machine and directs the hopper to dispense that number of tokens. In one embodiment, if the number of credits is not evenly divisible by the credit per token amount, the processor leaves the remaining credits on the gaming machine.

In one embodiment, the gaming device awards the player thousand five hundred credits. - In this embodiment, in the second component of the present invention, the bonus game includes a modifier which is based, at least in part, on the number of paylines wagered or selected in the base game. In this embodiment, the base game includes a plurality of paylines, which in one embodiment are associated with reels. The gaming device enables a player to wager on or select a number of the paylines. The number of paylines wagered on by the player, also known as the number of active paylines, determines the amount of a modifier. In one embodiment, the modifier is a multiplier that multiplies the award by a designated amount.
-
FIG. 8 displays a table 314 including afirst column 316 displaying number of paylines selected or the number of active paylines in the base game. Thesecond column 310 of the table displays the modifiers awarded in the bonus game which correspond to the number of active paylines in the base game. For example, if the player wagers on two paylines in the base game, an award is multiplied by three in the bonus game. Likewise, if the player wagers on or selects six paylines in the base game, an award is multiplied by five in the bonus game. In one embodiment, when a player wagers on more paylines in the base game, the gaming device provides a modifier of a higher value. In one embodiment, the modifier or multiplier amount provided in the bonus game is directly correlated to the number of paylines wager on in the base game. It should be appreciated that the gaming device may provide any suitable modifier or multiplier. - Referring to
FIG. 9A , upon a triggering event, the display device includes a plurality of masked, playerselectable selections payline indicator 322 and a number of picks ofselections indicator 324 which, in one embodiment, is the first component of the present invention, as discussed above. The display device includes a number of paylines selectedindicator 326 which indicates the number of paylines selected in the base game. The display device includes amultiplier display 328, which displays the value of the multiplier. The multiplier in the bonus game is determined, at least in part, by the number of paylines selected in the base game by the player. The gaming device includes an accumulated credits display 330. - Referring to
FIG. 9B , a player wagers four credits per payline in the base game, which is displayed in the amount bet perpayline indicator 322. Therefore the gaming device provides the player with an award of one thousand seven hundred fifty credits. In one embodiment, the gaming device provides the player an outcome or award based on the values associated with the picked selections and the multiplier. - It should be appreciated that the modifier may be any suitable type of award modifier. In one embodiment, when the player wagers on more paylines, the gaming device increases the modifier. In an alternative embodiment, an award modifier is based, at least in part, on the amount wagered per payline in the base game. In one embodiment, the modifier awarded in the bonus game directly correlates to the number of paylines selected in the base game. For example, the gaming device awards a higher award modifier when the player wagers on a greater number of paylines in the base game.
- In an alternative embodiment (not illustrated), for one of the components of present invention, the gaming device awards the same number of picks to the player in the secondary game and the amount wagered per payline in the base game determines, at least in part, the number of selections displayed to the player in the secondary game. In one embodiment, at least one of the player selectable selections is associated with an award. For example, the gaming device displays a plurality of masked player selectable selections upon a triggering event. Two of the displayed selections are associated with an award outcome. The player always receives two picks of the selections in the secondary game. If the player wagers one credit per payline in the base game, upon a triggering event, the gaming device displays twenty player selectable selections to the player in the bonus game. Thus, the player has two picks of the twenty selections to attempt to win the two awards. That is, the player has a one in ten chance of winning one of the awards. If the player wagers two credits per payline in the base game, upon a triggering event, the gaming device displays fourteen selections to the player bonus game. Thus, the player has two picks of the fourteen selections to attempt to win the two awards. When the player wagers two credits, the odds of winning increase to a one in seven chance of winning one of the awards. If the player wagers three credits per payline, the gaming device displays eight selections to the player. Thus, the player has two picks of the eight selections to attempt to choose the selections associated with the two awards. In this embodiment, the more a player wagers, the better chance they have of picking the selections associated with the awards.
- It should be appreciated that the gaming device may provide the player with any suitable number of picks of the player selectable selections in the bonus game. In one embodiment, as the player wagers more credits per payline in the base game, the gaming device increases the number of picks of the player selectable selections provided to the player in the bonus or secondary game. In an alternative embodiment, the gaming device determines the number of picks of the player selectable selections to award to the player based on the number of paylines wagered in the base game. In one embodiment, the player is enabled to select the displayed player selectable selections only once. In another embodiment, the player may select the same player selectable selection multiple times.
- In another embodiment (not illustrated), one of the components of the game includes the gaming device determining which different paytable to employ in the bonus game, at least in part, on the number of active paylines or the number of paylines wagered on in the base game. For example, the bonus game includes a plurality of different paytables, such as Paytable A, Paytable B and Paytable C. If a player wagers on one payline in the base game, the gaming device employs Paytable A in the bonus game. If the player wagers on two paylines in the base game, the gaming device employs Paytable B in the bonus game. If a player wagers on three paylines in the base game, the gaming device employs Paytable C in the bonus game. The number of picks of the selections provided to the player is determined by the amount wagered per payline, as discussed above. The paytable employed in the secondary game determines the awards, values or outcomes which are associated with the selections. The gaming device provides the player an award or outcome based, at least in part, on the values associated with the picked selections. In one embodiment, the gaming device provides the player with an award or outcome based on the values associated with the selections which are determined by the paytable employed and a modifier. In one embodiment, the bonus game is the same, regardless of the number of lines wagered, but the paytables employed are different.
- In another embodiment, the primary or base game is a card game. The gaming device enables the player to place a wager on at least one card or a group or hand of cards. In one embodiment, the amount of the wager determines at least one feature or component of the bonus game, such as the number of picks of the selections awarded to the player, the value of an award modifier, or the paytable employed. In such embodiment, the number of hands of cards wagered on determines at least one feature or component of the bonus game, such as the number of picks of the selectable selections awarded to the player, the value of an award modifier or the paytable employed. It should be appreciated that the card game can be any suitable card game.
- It should be appreciated that the gaming device may include any suitable number of paylines and any suitable number of player selectable selections. It should be appreciated that any game feature may be partially or completely based on the total amount of the wager, the amount of wager per payline or on the number of active paylines.
- In another embodiment of the present invention, the gaming device provides the player with a physical prize such as a token. The token may represent a predetermined number of credits in the gaming machine. For example, a token can represent four quarters in a gaming machine using quarter value credits or twenty nickels in a gaming machine using nickel value credits. In one embodiment, the gaming device automatically awards one or more tokens to the player upon the occurrence of a game event. In another embodiment, when the player presses the cash out button on gaming machine having a balance of credits which is not a multiple of the predefined token value, the processor calculates the number of tokens divisible into the total number of credits on the gaming machine and directs the hopper to dispense that number of tokens. If the number of credits is not evenly divisible by the credit per token amount, the processor leaves the remaining credits on the gaming machine.
- For example, the predefined token value is four credits and the player has six credits on the gaming machine. When the player presses the cash out button, the gaming device pays one token from the hopper and leaves two remaining credits on the credit meter of the gaming machine.
- It should thus be appreciated that the gaming machine of the present invention can include a suitable token dispenser controlled by the processor and operable to dispense a plurality of tokens.
- In another embodiment, the token provided to the player is a physical prize such as a watch. For example, when a player achieves $20 worth of credits, instead of a monetary units, the gaming device awards the player a watch. When a player achieves $30 worth of credits, instead of a monetary units, the gaming device awards the player the watch and the player will have $10 of remaining credits. In one embodiment, the gaming device provides the player with a receipt in any suitable form representing the token which can be redeemed elsewhere. It should be appreciated that tokens may thus be incorporated in any suitable manner in association with the present invention.
- It should be appreciated that various changes and modifications to the presently preferred embodiments described herein will be apparent to those skilled in the art. Such changes and modifications can be made without departing from the spirit and scope of the present invention and without diminishing its intended advantages. It is therefore intended that such changes and modifications be covered by the appended claims.
