President of the Republic opens the Timor-Leste day at the Expo 2010 Shanghai, China

The 13th of July was Timor-Leste day at the Expo 2010 Shanghai, China. The Expo is an international event of great importance and has information about the culture of several people around the world.

With its pavilion, Timor-Leste had the opportunity to show the reality and impact of this country to the various internationals communities, and particularly to the Chinese people.

In the opening ceremony, the President of the Republic, José Ramos-Horta, talked about environment, Timor-Leste’s theme in the Expo 2010, which is a common theme to several countries. He underlined that in this new Era of development, and since the existence of climate change is noted, it’s also up to Asia to express their perspective about the environmental issue.

He also referred that Timor-Leste, as a country with only eight years of existence, had the opportunity to mark its presence in this world exposition, where several countries participate, and to make its development known to the world, which is based essentially on tradition and culture connected to the environment.

On the same occasion the Secretary of State of the Council of Ministers, Ágio Pereira, in the role of General-Commissioner of Timor-Leste for the Expo 2010 Shanghai, pointed out that “although the environment is a big challenge faced by all the development countries, Timor-Leste persist in looking after the development of its own country, oriented to the future”.

Also participating in this event were the Vice-Prime Minister for Social Affairs, José Luís Guterres, members of the National Parliament, Government members, Commissary Longuinhos Monteiro, PNTL (Timor-Leste National Police) General-Commander and the representatives of the relevant Ministries. Included in the group of Timorese participants are also elders of the 13 districts, participants in the traditional dances interpreted by the following groups: Lezeaval, Timor Furak, Lensu Mutin from Suai, Lahane, and others who recited poetry.

Two hundred and forty countries participated in the Expo 2010 Shanghai, China, including Timor-Leste.
