New York: Collins & Hannay, Publishers, 1833. delivered at Hotel Dieu, in 1832. Published by an association of physicians. Translated from the French, by A. Sidney Doane. Pp. 312, original purple cloth with gilt lettered brown leather skiver label on spine, the boards lightly flecked and rubbed, edges faded and fore-corners lightly bruised, spine faded to brown and slightly creased at head and foot; faint damp stains to fore-edges of leaves, scattered foxing; Collins & Hannay, Publishers, New York, 1833. First U.S. edition. Wellcome II, p. 503. *First translation into English of Volume I of Dupuytren's Lecons orales de clinique chirurgicale (4 volumes, 1832-34, see Garrison & Morton 5590). Also issued under the imprints of Carter, Hendee & Co. (Boston), and De Silver & Thomas (Philadelphia) in the same year. Guillaume Dupuytren (1777-1835) was head surgeon at the Paris hospital Hotel-Dieu. He began his career as a military surgeon, treating Napoleon's haemorrhoids. He is best known today for his description of Dupuytren's contracture, a thickening and tightening of tissue under the skin in the hand, named after him.
