As far as the general public, when comparing modern fashion, modern models to pinup, yes they are comparing current and modern to vintage. This means pinup. So yes I agree, pinup is vintage verses what's new, modern and current. Once you enter pinup you'll see that there's so many styles within many era's not just one. That's why it bugs me when folks not in this industry say I should be more versatile and not limit myself as a stylist. Anyone knowledgeable and actually involved in pinup knows there's numerous styles and many era's within pinup. Classic Cheesecake Pinup, Old Hollywood, Rockabilly, Vintage and Modern-day Pinup. And era's from the 20's until the 60's. That's 40 years of fashion! Once you know pinup history and pinup current styles, you'll find that pinup is not exactly or always vintage And any pinup that's vintage is way different than modern-day pinup. We all associate them in the same industry yet very different styles altogether. In true vintage no matter what era or style everything is actual vintage. There are of course things added to an outfit that may be brand new but has a vintage look. But overall a true Vintage Model will have actual vintage clothing. I find that vintage models also are more specific with matching everything to a certain era. Meaning their hairdo is 1950's, so therefore their wardrobe is 1950's as well. No 60's hair and 40's clothing. No wild color nail polish or designs. No vintage outfit and modern looking heels. Across the board everything is purposely planned to be within the same era. This would include makeup. 1940's eye brows totally different than 1950's. Shape lips were drawn in, also different from era to era. No woman wore a cat eye until like the mid 50's and the avaerage everyday woman did not. Look at the major difference in eye makeup from 1920' to the 40's, 40's to the 50's. You can model a vintage cheesecake style, aka classic pinup. You can do Military Pinup in a vintage way, as well as Rockabilly. As long as the look matches within the same era and clothing is vintage, it's vintage. It's almost a given that Old Hollywood or Old Hollywood Glam is vintage. Nothing is modern looking. The photography drastically changes from modern-day pinup to vintage, or Old Hollywood. Usually black and white images with shadows purposely placed in specific areas. Rockabilly can be modern-day, so can pinup such as cheesecake or ALT and tattooed pinups. Rockabilly can be true vintage. Same as Military Pinup. It can be pinup but modern-day or be actual vintage. The major difference is the wardrobe. Styling, props, accessories and photography are next in line. All different when specializing in true vintage. Vintage wardrobe can be found at thrift stores, online or at garage sales. Can cost very little or major bucks. Wardrobe costs obviously a major factor if you shoot often. So no matter the cost, it adds up. There's also so many modern garments that can look vintage. The main thing I look at is the clothing and heels. It's like the vintage bathing suit contest during Viva. You can't enter or compete without an actual vintage bathing suit. And for a vintage bathing suit or clothing contest you wouldn't be in modern looking high heels. Just like your hairdo wouldn't be modern either. If you have a 1950's hairstyle, 1950's clothes or vintage looking wardrobe and your high heels are modern, YOU'RE NOT a vintage model. I mean that's not a vintage look, true vintage. Modern hairdo, vintage looking clothes and heels,.... pinup yes, vintage model no! Things like wild, modern nail designs. As a stylist I'd rather see groomed nails even if designs, than ungroomed nails. But clear and plain as long as groomed is great. In pinup everyone thinks it's all about red polish. I agree it's common but in pinup and true vintage clear and plain nails were very common. I've seen Marilyn Monroe in a gown I'm sure costs thousands, a mink fur, fabulous high heels, diamonds on neck, in ears and clear nails, no polish, no design. Other times she was in capri pants, aka peddle pushers and a casual sweater with her nails painted red. I think overall there's just more attention paid to each detail being real vintage than in pinup , modern-day pinup to be specific. I just know if the wardrobe, hairdo or high heels look modern, it's not vintage. May very well be pinup but never true vintage. There are vintage magazine, vintage clothing boutiques and designers, as well as vintage models and photographers that specialize directly in vintage. Most don't play pinup for a day either. Most live a vintage lifestyle, never wear modern clothing, don't listen to modern music. The passion for vintage is within them every day, every shoot. 1.
