Amazed that so many different and popular Ice Cream brands are GLUTEN FREE – so there’s no excuse no to be cool during our HOT Summer weather.
Enjoy a Calippo, a Magnum, A Twister, A Loop the Loop, Solero, Mini Milk, (selected) Magnum, Carte D’Or, Ben & Jerry’s, Baskin Robins and Haagan Dazs Ice Cream!
BEN & JERRYS:
A list provided by Unilever (the manufacturer of Ben & Jerry’s) helpfully specifies the current up-to-date information on ice creams which are Gluten Free and have no gluten containing ingredients. A copy is attached below. The following flavours are GLUTEN FREE:
Such a great selection from the main flavours I’ve seen in the frozen cabinets which I didn’t know where GF!
SOLERO:
Lovely refreshing iced lollies which have two variations which are GLUTEN FREE:
BASKIN ROBINS:
On their UK website, the list out 31 flavours which they sell in the UK through their franchised shops and outlets. In addition, they do offer some nutritional information which specifies some popular flavours which are GLUTEN FREE (or do not contain “gluten cereal“).
For international information on Baskin Robins, please check out their various webpages.
HAAGEN DAZS:
From the UK Website, there is limited information on individual flavours listing out the calories (energy), fat, carbohyrdrates, fibre, protein and salt of individual flavours and not much else. It is rather frustrating as on the USA website, they at least address GLUTEN in their FAQ and respond to the question “Do your products contain gluten?” with “As a general rule, the gluten in our frozen dessert products is present only in added bakery products such as cookies, cake, or brownies“. And in their Flavour Finder, you can find a listing of all the individual ingredients in each flavour.
Interestingly, Ocado provide detailed information on all their products for sale (including Haagen Dazs ice cream and state clearly whether it contains GLUTEN or not.)
BOOJA -BOOJA
This British made Ice cream is Dairy Free, Gluten Free, Soya Free, Organic and Mostly Raw, according to their own literature. I have seen this available at Wholefood Markets in London (in the freezer cabinets) and enjoyed an Easter Egg from their seasonal Chocolate selection before but not their ice cream. The full range available is:
Interesting and different names for some fairly regular flavours!
CARTE D’OR:
Also made by Unilever, they have a wide range of boxed ice cream and many of their tubs are GLUTEN FREE:
MAGNUM:
Such an iconic brand of Ice Cream (that is celebrating 25 years of ice creaming). I always knew I could enjoy the “Classic” iced bars but there are plenty of other Magnum varieties that are GLUTEN FREE:
Mini Milk Bars:
I guess these should be GLUTEN FREE although if you’re avoiding lactose, I’m not to sure that these would be suitable as they contain MILK.
A favourite which I remember from my childhood as Walls have been making these since 1976. I haven’t seen in the shops much but probably out at the seaside?!
CALIPPO:
Another popular brand suitable for the kids (as the iced lolly is contained in a cardboard tube) so saves making a lot of mess.
Just one Cornetto….
I used to love the Cornetto ice creams (with strawberry always being my favourite) but avoiding GLUTEN means missing out on the crunchy biscuit cone which makes these ice creams a challenge as I’ve only ever seen them served into biscuit cones but according to the manufacturer, the soft ice cream served (is GLUTEN FREE!)
***Just don’t eat the biscuit cone, as that does contain wheat flour!
TWISTER:
Another great iced lolly which I didn’t know was GLUTEN FREE. The following flavours are suitable:
HAZELBROOK (Ireland) /WALLS HEART BRAND
Some iconic Ice Cream lollies branded Hazelbrook (made by Walls) are also GLUTEN FREE although some of these are only available in Ireland.
And don’t forget to check out my Chocolate Guide. I love Chocolate whether in regular GLUTEN FREE BARS, GLUTEN FREE CHOCOLATE EGGS , Biscuits Cakes or tarts.
Information received from Unilever on Gluten Free Ice Creams (Version 43 correct as at 09 July 2014).
