I think that’s enough of Iceland in the summer of 2022 - not that you’d guess it was summer from the state of the sky. I spent my last day taking refuge in the warm water of the Sky Lagoon.

What next, camping in the New Forest or lifeboats?

If you’ve got a few hours to kill in the south west of Iceland before heading to the airport, you might as well enjoy some geothermal bliss. The Blue Lagoon is wonderful but very expensive and at risk of a volcano erupting underneath it with next to no warning. I have issues with the Sky Lagoon (why does it cost extra to use the sauna & steam room and why do you only get one go in them?? It’s also too small for its full capacity and it’s the only pool that I know of not owned by an Icelandic company) but it’s very pleasant for a change and much more convenient from Reykjavík. #skylagoon #iceland #geothermal

If I was opening a campsite, I might not put the tents, the people who are mostly likely to be making midnight expeditions, in the field with the pond. Luckily, you’re probably only going to camp in Iceland in the summer when it never gets properly dark so hopefully you’ll see the pond before you end up in it. #iceland #camping #tent #panorama

Another reason to camp in Iceland: some campsites have their own geothermal hotpots. At this one, the little blue icon disappeared in the sea of little blue icons of facilities because there’s so much available and so no one else realised they were there and I got one pretty much all to myself (ok, I had to share it with a couple for half an hour before they went back to their campervan). #iceland #camping #geothermal #hotpots #hottubs

I didn’t get into the habit of taking photos of my car. I’m not a big fan of driving LHD cars - I spend the first few days convinced I’m going to hit the yellow marker poles, take out the nearside on high verges or hit something coming the other way because I don’t know where my edges and corners are. But if you want to get out of the south-west of Iceland, hiring a car is the only way to do it. There are no trains and although there was a decent long-distance bus network ten years ago, virtually none of it exists anymore.

The best way to get around the Ring Road is by camping - you can be spontaneous and save a fortune at the same time. Therefore, lots of people rent campervans but it’s cheaper to pair the smallest car available with a tiny tent that fits in your checked bag, so that’s what I do.

Fun fact: you don’t need a massive 4x4 for the Ring Road. You only need a 4x4 for getting out into the Highlands where most of the really rough bits are illegal in rented cars anyway, unless you can convince someone to give you the expensive specialist insurance.

The light here at Krauma is so dramatic I hoped to be able to turn it black and white. Didn’t work. But look at the way there’s a really heavy black cloud and the way bright direction sunshine is breaking right through. This is what you do in Iceland when the weather’s bad, you take to a geothermal pool.

It actually didn’t rain this day despite the cloud. I took my tent across the field to a tomato farm and camped inside a polytunnel just in case. Don’t do that. It was far too hot and the tent can resist a bit of rain but it was wet inside and out with condensation by morning. I had to take my bedding into the big greenhouse and dry it on the hot pipes in there.

And I suddenly feel the need to clarify that it is a real campsite where I’ve stayed before, I didn’t just break into random greenhouses.

When you approach Strokkur, the star attraction at Geysir, the first thing you’ll probably see is a dense ring of people with phones and cameras aloft, all staring at a small pool, which seems to breathe - great hiccuping breaths that make us all hold our breath, waiting for the rush of waves to become an eruption. Perlan in Reykjavik used to have an “artificial geyser” - effectively a two-storey fountain - but it’s nothing like the drama of thousands of litres of boiling water exploding thirty feet into the air and showering the tourists downwind with cooled water.

Fun fact: our English word “geyser” comes from Icelandic - Strokkur’s big brother, the dormant Geysir (“gay-seer”), which means Gusher, used to erupt up to 70ft every few minutes but the hotspot has moved and Geysir is quiet now. #geysir #geyser #strokkur #iceland #geothermal #hotspring

The next day was the Golden Circle. It rained a lot, so much that I had to run away from Gullfoss and take shelter in the hot water at Fontana. Fun fact: this lake, with natural hot springs around the shore, is where the Icelandic Parliament got baptised back in July 1000 when they voted to adopt Christianity. Who wants to be baptised in a freezing river when there’s a warmish lake only 20 miles away? My experience is that the lake is still freezing unless you’re actually in the boiling springs (which you don’t want to do, you’ll lose all your skin!). #hotspring #laugarvatn #spa #geothermalwater #geothermal
