Pallavi Polekar, a 32-year-old primary school teacher at Sattari in north Goa, had never seriously entertained the thought of becoming a published poet. Two years ago, after being persuaded by friends and family, she wrote a collection of 75 Marathi poems titled Swapnavel but put it aside.

On Monday as her collection of poems was released at a function at the Raj Bhavan, she was at a loss for words. “I have been teaching for over a decade. This is just happenstance. I heard from a family friend, who is a writer, that the Raj Bhavan has launched an initiative to help first-time authors get their works published and I applied. I did not imagine I would be selected and be a writer. It is yet to sink in. But now I feel a sense of responsibility,” she said.

Pallavi was among four first-time authors whose five books were released by Governor P S Sreedharan Pillai as part of Nayi Pahel, a scheme introduced by the Raj Bhavan in February to help Goan writers publish their first literary works. The Raj Bhavan is sponsoring the cost of printing and publishing books in Konkani, Marathi, Hindi, Sanskrit and English and the plan is to publish 100 books in the 22 scheduled languages over the next year.

“It is difficult for a new writer to get their book published. In the literary world, the road to reward and recognition is a hard struggle, especially for people from weaker sections of society. We want to encourage aspiring writers and talented people who otherwise do not have access to such platforms,” said Governor Pillai.

The books may be in the categories of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, biography, autobiography, travelogue and anthology, but must not contain anything against the nation, national policies, national leaders or hurting the sentiments of any religion, caste or creed. An expert panel has been set up for scrutiny of applications. The Raj Bhavan is not involved in the sale of the published books, however.

Festive offer

Sanjay Ramesh Salelkar (33), a postal assistant, has been moonlighting as an anchor at cultural events, folk performances and birthday parties on weekends. Several years ago, building up on his college project, he wrote down his experiences in Konkani in a manuscript (Sutra Sanchalan Kala Aani Shastra) on the art of anchoring, featuring interviews with professionals.

“Anchoring is my passion. I had been trying to publish it as a book. I submitted a draft to the government institutions and academies, but it was not selected. One requires money to publish and market a book. When I heard of this scheme, I thought of giving it a shot. This book has helpful tips for anyone who aspires to be an anchor,” said Salelkar.

Two books in English – Bon Voyage and An Un Prejudiced View by noted columnist Pachu Menon – and a Marathi book, Mi Asa Kasa by advocate Manohar C Adpaikar, were among the other books released at the Raj Bhavan.

Goan writer Damodar Mauzo, who received the Jnanpith award – the country’s highest literary honour – on Saturday, felicitated the writers and advised them to keep reading and observing.

“I am 78, approaching 79, but I am still young enough to read young writers…Getting your book published is difficult. I have gone through it all. It is very important to get the title of a published writer. You may have written hundreds of poems or stories and articles, but unless you have published a book, you are not considered a published writer and you don’t get the due respect,” Mauzo said.
