In Real Life

A pair of Raccoons looking for food.

Raccoons are originally found across the United States, southern Canada, Mexico and northern South America, but have also been introduced to parts of Asia and Europe. They are bear-like mammals at about the size of a cat, with a thick layer of fur that ranges from gray to brown colors. Their most distinctive feature are the black mask across the eyes and their bushy ringed tail. Their paws have five fingers each, giving them a great ability for grabbing things and climbing. Those paws are extra sensitive, and they are the main tool that raccoons use to sense the world around them.

Common Raccoons are highly adaptable, found across multiple regions as long as a water source is available, inclining woodland areas, farmlands, suburban and urban areas. They make their dens in trees, caves, sewers, deserted buildings and houses, where they have been known to sleep for long periods of time when harsh, cold climates arrive during winter.

As an omnivorous species and opportunistic feeders, Raccoons feed on fruits, nuts, insects, rodents, frogs, eggs and crayfish, but they have adapted to eat what they can find in urban areas. They are active at night, and are solitary most of the time.

Trivia

Photo of robot Raccoon during the event "アライグマがやってくる!?けものフレンズ3 SHOPにあそびに行くのだ!" together with the guest, KemoV's Island Fox on screen. Image from PR Times.
The fully animated Live2D model of Raccoon resembling the design of KemoV's Friend designs. The model was used for the robot Raccoon's face during the Kemono Friends 3 pop-up store event in 2023. The image was taken from an AR image generated from the event ticket.
  • The character Raccoon appeared at the Pop-Up Shop at Shinjuku Marui held on March 4, 2023, as an interactive robot for the event "アライグマがやってくる!?けものフレンズ3 SHOPにあそびに行くのだ!" together with the guest, KemoV's Island Fox on screen. The robot has movable arms and is voiced by Raccoon's CV to interact and greet participants. PR Times report. Her face was a fully-animated Live2D avatar similar to KemoV's Vtuber designs.
  • Raccoons are very good swimmers and can stay in the water for hours, often hunting for food there.
  • That extra sensitivity in their paws may explain some of their most peculiar behaviors, like individuals in captivity rolling their food in the water or rubbing their hands together when not holding anything.
