Carris Metropolitana announces new features on the South Bank and return to Areeiro

There are five new Carris Metropolitana lines about to come into operation in Almada, Seixal and Sesimbra, including the first between the western part of Lisbon and the South Bank. And Areeiro will once again have direct connections to Almada.

Two of the lines that connect Almada and Lisbon will leave Sete Rios and return to Areeiro, responding to a will of the almadense population. As of January 30th, the lines 3710 (Costa da Caparica) and 3703 (Parque Urbano de Almada) will start and end their journey in Areeiro, in Lisbon, and will no longer use the Sete Rios terminal.

The Areeiro bus terminal is located on Avenida Padre Manuel da Nóbrega, in the back of Gago Coutinho. It makes the connection with the Roma-Areeiro railway station and the Areeiro Metro. Here stopped some lines of the old TST and Rodoviária de Lisboa. But the Lisbon City Council decided, at some point, to close the Areeiro bus terminal and concentrate all efforts in Sete Rios; and the arrival of the Carris Metropolitana, at the beginning of last summerwas the pretext to start making this change.

The return of two lines from Almada of Carris Metropolitana to Areeiro allows the reinforcement of this terminal which is more central in the city, diluting at the same time the offer of public transport around the capital. The Lisbon City Hall had, in September 2022, promised the return of the Carris Metropolitana's South Bank service to Areeiro by the end of that year - a promise that is now being welcomed at the end of January. The local authority also said it was preparing a new terminal in this parish to replace the current onenot having at the time given any further details beyond the new location: Avenida Almirante Gago Coutinho. To the newspaper Almadense, the City Council led by Carlos Moedas advanced this week that the project of the new terminal already "it's done" and that it is waiting "in the Territorial Intervention Unit-Center for launching the tender for the execution of the contract". The municipality has not yet answered Lisboa Para Pessoas.

With the arrival of Carris Metropolitana to the North Shore in the beginning of this 2023, the old Rodoviária de Lisboa routes that stopped at Areeiro were maintained: the 2790 and the 2791that are going to Alverca, and 2722which goes to Via Rara, in Santa Iria de Azóia. For its part, the 3710which will return to Areeiro, has frequencies between 10 and 30 minutes and connects Costa da Caparica to the capital (or vice versa) in about 50 minutes. The 3703which also goes back to Areeiro, has identical frequencies and allows you to go from the center of Almada (Parque Urbano Comandante Júlio Ferraz), passing through Cova da Piedade, to Lisbon (or vice versa) also in less than an hour.

New lines in Almada, Seixal and Sesimbra

As of next Monday, January 23, Carris Metropolitana is getting ready to start operating five new lines in Almada, Seixal and Sesimbra municipalitieswith emphasis on reinforcing the connections to the North Shore of the Tagus.

The operation of the line will be started 3705which establishes the link between the Charneca da Caparica and the Seven Riversline, in Lisbon, and the 3006 - circular from Aroeira -, guaranteeing the population a new local transportation service. Another new connection will be between Almada and Algésmade by the line 3701 - this line will be the first to connect the western zone of Lisbon and Oeiras, with a municipality on the South Bank. And to better meet the registered demand, the line 3001which already connects Cristo Rei and the Cacilhas terminal, will now have 20 more circulations per day.

To promote connection between Seixal and AlmadaThe 3505 line, between Paio Pires (Farinheiras) and the Cacilhas terminal, will start operating, on a similar route to the old line 108, with a timetable, especially during peak hours, and with articulation with the boat. Sesimbra will, in turn, receive a new line, the 3540which will guarantee a direct connection from Alfarim and Meco to Coina station (and vice-versa).

In the last few days, several small adjustments and reinforcements have been made to other lines of Carris Metropolitana throughout the Lisbon Metropolitan Area, which you can view here.
