When Anne Hathaway first met her (future) The Idea of You co-star Nicholas Galitzine, it wasn't exactly love at first sight.

In fact, Hathaway was a little bit surprised by Galitzine's appearance.

"He walked in, and I just went, I just giggled, and then I thought, 'What are we going to do about that hair?'" she told Access Hollywood while chatting about her first impression of Galitzine when they met for The Idea of You.

"I had my blonde hair!" Galitzine, 29, said in response.

"You had frosted tips, and I was just like, is it like an aughts thing? ... I didn't understand your hair at all," Hathaway, 41, said.

"I had dyed it blonde for a role, but it had grown out at that point," Galitzine added. "But it was, like, at a really awkward length, oh God."

Hathaway joked that she thought there was light "radiating" from Galitzine that day when she met him, but the actor shut her down, saying it was "the peroxide in my hair."

Hathaway and Galitzine star in The Idea of You, out May 2 and available to stream on Prime Video, based on the book of the same name. He told PEOPLE in March that his first chemistry read with Hathaway (despite her hesitations about his hair) was "transformative."

"As an actor you oftentimes go into those rooms with so much trepidation, and it was so open,” Galitzine recalled of his first time meeting the Oscar winner. “And I kind of remember leaving the room going, 'You know, if this doesn't work out, I am really proud of the work that I did, even in this space.’ ”

Galitzine was “asked to bring a song and convince Annie to dance with me” during the chemistry read, he said. “And that was very anxiety-producing because I am not a dancer, and it's also hard, you know, you're meeting someone for the first time and you don't want it to be weird, but with those things you kind of have to go all in.”

“And it was so open and I think it was really at that moment that we kind of knew that there was a connection — that there was a chemistry there and it was so much fun in that audition, which is rare to say,” he continued of Hathaway.

The following day, he said, he was “overjoyed” when he got a call and the team “said they wanted me to be their Hayes.”
