At-Home Art: Mondrian-Inspired Painting

Art focus: Line, Shape, Primary Colors

Inspiration: Piet Mondrian

Fine motor skills: Cutting, pasting, painting, measuring

Time Duration: 30 mins

Vocabulary:

  • Primary colors

  • Line

  • Shapes: rectangle, square

Objective: Learn primary colors and create shapes with the use of lines.

Materials:

  • Black Construction Paper

  • 12" x 18"Scissors

  • Paint: Red, Yellow, Blue

  • Paint brush

  • Water container

  • GluePencil

  • White Paper 12" x 18" 

  • Paint cups or containers

  • Ruler

Directions:

  1. Use a ruler and scissors to cut ½” x 18” inch strips out of the black construction paper.

  2. Arrange the strips (lines) onto the white paper to create your Mondrian-like artwork with various rectangles and squares. 

  3. Glue the strips of paper in place and cut off any ends that run off the side of the white paper.

  4. Choose three rectangles and/or squares to paint. 

  5. Paint those rectangles and/or squares yellow, red, or blue.

  6. Let the artwork dry and display!
