Since our last summer vacation in the Alentejo, we fell totally in love with this region. The magic and beauty of this part of Portugal speaks totally for itself. Especially, the tranquillity and the historic traces of the Romans and Moors make the Alentejo region an unique and magical place.
Step back in time in Monsaraz
Besides small towns like Serpa and Mértola, Monsaraz is one of the most beautiful villages in the Alentejo. It takes you back in time, as the town has been occupied by Romans, Moors, and Knights Templar through the ages. Each of them has left marks on the architectural and cultural fabric of the town.
As soon as you walk through the narrow streets of Monsaraz, you will feel the beautiful charm of this village. The layout of the small town is very simple because there are only two main streets with intersecting alleys. Here you will find whitewashed houses and historical monuments, which will invite you for further exploration.
The crown jewel of Monsaraz is undoubtedly its castle, where you can admire the views of the surrounding Alentejo countryside, Alqueva lake, and the rooftops of Monsaraz itself. The castle of Monsaraz is free to enter and it’s also known as the Torre das Feiticeiras.
From historic churches to stunning landscapes
Another must-visit is the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Lagoa which stands as a testament to the village’s spiritual heritage and architectural beauty. This church was built in the Renaissance style and houses the marble tomb of Gomes Martins Silvestre, who was a Knight Templar and the village’s first mayor. The surrounding square is filled with other impressive buildings such as the former town hall and the Igreja da Misericórdia.
Monsarez is a proud reminder of the village’s historical significance, but at the same time it offers breathtaking panoramas that stretch across the Alentejo to the horizon, where the sky meets the Alqueva lake. For us a magical must-visit in the heart of the Alentejo!
Good to know: Lisbon and Évora are very close to Monsaraz and we also recommend a trip to the Alqueva Lake.
