When I first saw the trailer for this new romantic comedy, I knew I’d want to see. Mostly because I did like Patrick Dempsey in other such roles. Made of Honor doesn’t play up its titular honor, but it can be fun. If you let it.

He’s rich, successful (to most women, anyway) and charming. Yes, Tom (Patrick Dempsey) “is living the dream” or so it would seem. He can have any woman he wants but only under his rules. One of which means he has ZERO commitments let alone a relationship. What he does have is the best kind of friendship with his college buddy, Hannah (Michelle Monaghan). Tom and Hannah met under rather unusual circumstances and ever since then Hannah, knowing the player he is, is nothing but the honest friend he needs. When Hannah leaves for a work on a trip to Scotland, Tom finds that maybe Hannah means more to him than a date to the recurring weddings his father has.

Critics are unkind to these clichéd romantic comedies, and while they may be trope-y, I often find myself enjoying them. Most likely because they tend towards being lighthearted. That unfortunately doesn’t excuse the flaws of a character who’s quite careless but then again, this isn’t he first film to use that device. Rumored to be a kind of My Best Friend’s Wedding remake in a gender reversal, the “twist” here is a male maid of honor. Admittedly some of these scenes where Tom tries to “fit” in with the duties of a bridesmaid are laugh out loud funny which helps the film be a little more down to earth.
The obvious problem here is the fact that Tom thinks he can sleep with anyone without consequence. Movie trivia for this even says the film originally was slapped with an R-rating, too, suggesting some things were cut. If you like a film with more of a hero who isn’t quite so casual (there is a sense of change), Made of Honor probably isn’t for you. That said, if you can overlook that, then it’s a funny movie with a super popular 2000s heartthrob.
The last twenty minutes is probably the best part and perhaps even the script at its funniest. There’s moments that make us go aww (like Tom and Hannah’s dessert game) and some that make you giggle. On par with most other romantic comedies when it comes to shenanigans and typical tropes, this is a mostly fun time once you get to the good stuff. Plus, tying into the start of the film, the ending really is quite cute.

Content: Tom has numerous different paramours and doesn’t do “back-to-backs” he tells his latest in an opening scene. We continually learn that he’s had various different one-night stands including a past with another of the bridesmaids. The opening shows a costume party in which Tom accidentally gets into bed with the wrong woman, she turns him down. There are various other suggestive remarks and minor scenes that only confirm Tom’s no commitment attitude. There is a scene involving a demonstration of sex toys at a bridal shower. Various other crude comments are made to anatomy and some crude gestures. Profanities are of the standard like sh*t, he**, a** along with some abuses of the Lord’s name (there may be a muttered f-word). Drinking is also significant in the film. A woman comes to Tom’s room in her lingerie wanting to have sex. The film is PG-13.
