Espigueiros de Lindoso (Granaries of Lindoso) - Portugal

If you happen to travel to the North of Portugal, don't forget to pay a visit to the world's famous Granaries of Lindoso, a village situated in the municipality of Ponte da Barca.

This is the largest gathering of granaries in Portugal. To be precise, there are 67 granaries which have been well maintained, preserving the local History.

The granaries date back to the XVIII century and are classified as Public Interest Value.

These 67 granaries were used by the local community to store and keep the corn spikes from rains and storms, allowing them to dry.

They have lateral cracks to allow the circulation of air... and the stone wheels, on top of their “legs”, were designed to prevent rodents from climbing and eating all the cereals.

On top of the granaries there are usually crosses, a way of the farmers asking for divine protection for their crops.

The granaries are located at the top of a small hill and the views from up there are simply breathtaking.

The village of Lindoso is located just a few meters away from he granaries and as such, tall apartments and skyscrapers are not allowed to be constructed here.

If you are in the mood, you can make a picnic right in the middle of the granaries. No one will judge you or harass you for that.
