Somudai Jubilee Cup 2021

St Thomas Church of Aldona is one with years of rich history. The church has stood against time and completed 425 years this year. On the 26th of September 2021, the Parish led by the Parish Priest; Fr Thomas Lobo and the Parish Pastoral Council organized a “Somudai Jubilee Cup Tournament” to celebrate the jubilee of the Church and the people of Aldona, keeping in mind all the necessary SOPs.

The tournament commenced with short prayer  service was conducted by catechistAndrea lobo and Deacon Melito.

Fr Thomas Lobo addressed the gathering by his few words of wisdom and motivation.

All the participants took a sportsmanship oath led by Mathson Miranda.

 Sir Agnelo Rodrigues, physical education teacher  at St Michaels Convent High School Vagator, Anjunaand  Sir PratapVolvoikar, physical education teacher from St Thomas Boys High School Aldona graced the tournament with their presence as  the Chief Guest and Guest of Honor respectively.

The tournament  was declared open with a “Kick-Off” by the Parish priest, Chief Guest and the Guest of Honor, which was followed by a peppy dance performance by the children and the Youth of Aldona, choreographed by Angel and Jerusha,

The registration counter was managed by Darina Lobo and Andrea Lobo.  A total of Nineteen Somudais/teams  enthusiastically participated in the 5-a side tie breaker tournament.  Each team  consisted of an Alter boy/girl, Youth Boy, Youth Girl, Married Man, and a Married woman. All teams put in a commendable spirit of teamwork and sportsmanship and an undying fighting spirit right till the end.

The highlight of the evening was an exhibition match held between St. Philip and James Parish, Cortalim led by the Asst. Parish Priest Fr. Aidan; former deacon at the St. Thomas Parish Aldona. Savio Rodrigues the  PPC moderator welcomed the  Cortalimteam. Both teams played with zeal and energy and at the end of the match,  St Philip and James Parish, Cortalimpacked the trophy beating St Thomas Parish, Aldona,  1-0.

Fr. Aidan Fernandesaddressed the gathering, thanking the Aldona parish for inviting them and also gave a small token on behalf of their Parish to the AldonaParish.

The hosts for the evening were Angel Fernandes and JerushaMoniz who did a fabulous job and kept the audience engaged with their fun spot prizes.

Mr. Marshall D’ Mello and Johnny Pinto were the referees of the tournament and made sure that   all the games proceeded smoothly.

The winners of the Jubilee cup were SokoiloSantarxette. In the second place we had Khoirut- Red Devils while Carona Warriors had to settle for the third place. The highest scorer of the tournament was awarded to  Shannon Rodrigues who was the youngest top scorer.

The vote of thanks was proposed by Jovi Dsouza who appreciated our well wishers and every one who helped to make this event a great success.

 The evening of togetherness and celebration of sport and people ended with the Chief Guest’s speech and the Prize distribution.

This sporting event would not have been possible if not for the untiring efforts taken by the organising trio of Ronaldo Victoria, Mathson Miranda and Jovi Dsouza.
