Are you looking for a fun summer craft to make for your dog? June is Pride Month, so I created DIY rainbow tie dye dog bandanas for Burt and Lucy. I made this craft even more dynamic by upcycling an old t-shirt for the bandanas! Keep reading to learn how you can make this simple dog mom craft for your own pup.

Tie Dye Trend for Dogs

Tie dye is one of the hottest trends to experiment with during the quarantine this year. Many people are using bleach to do reverse dying on dark clothing items. But I love color, so of course, I had to go the rainbow route for these DIY bandanas! I love how they turned out.

Rainbow anything is a great Summer accessory and tie dye is the must have trend for you and your dog!

For this simple dog mom craft project, I used a tie dye kit I had leftover from family vacation last summer. You don’t have to buy anything fancy, this one from Michaels would be perfect! The kit comes with lots of colors, gloves, a table covering and plenty of rubber bands to tie up your creations.

The tie dye kit I bought also came with instructions on how to make some popular designs like stripes, crinkles and the swirl that I went with for these bandanas. The best thing about tie dye is that you can do whatever you want!

DIY Rainbow Tie Dye Dog Bandana

To get the rainbow swirl effect that I wanted I used all the colors of the rainbow. In case you have a hard time keeping track, the best way I know to remember the colors of the rainbow is Roy G Biv! That is Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet!

Now that you know that… here’s how to make this craft!

How to Make Your Own Rainbow Tie Dye Dog Bandana

I cut out two triangles from the bottom of an old white t-shirt. This is a great way to re-use old shirts that might have stains on them! Look for one that is 100% cotton because that will give you the brightest tie dye colors. T-shirt material doesn’t really fray, so this makes a no-sew dog bandana. 

Once you have your triangles, lay them out flay. Pinch the fabric in the center and start twisting it. Gather the sides as them spin in and try to be neat with how you fold everything. But don’t worry, you really can’t mess this up!

Once you have it gathered into a swirl it should be shaped like a hockey puck. Wrap it up with 3 rubber bands. The first should go straight across, the second goes up and down and the third will be diagonal.

Adjust the rubber bands until you have 6 mostly even sections, like wedges of a pie!

Apply your dye with 1 color in each section. Go in the Roy G Biv order to get a nice rainbow effect. If you’re keeping track, I left out Indigo (isn’t that just blue anyhow??).

Really soak that dye in there! I don’t know if there’s such a thing as too much!

Tips for the Brightest Rainbow Tie Dye

Once the bandana is saturated in dye, pop it into a plastic bag and let it sit for at least 8 hours. Ideally, you can leave it for 24 hours to get really bright colors. See how bored Burt was having to wait 24 hours to see the results!?

When you’re ready to unwrap your new tie dye, rinse it out until the water is clear. I like to leave the rubber bands on for this part.

Once your tie dye dog bandana is all rinsed out you can unwrap it and admire your artwork!

Let the bandana air dry to have the brightest color. I was tight on time the day I made these so I put them in the dryer and it definitely faded the color. So don’t do what I did!
