Heinrich Hoffmann (1809-1894) was a German psychiatrist and author, best known for his work Der Struwwelpeter, an illustrated book that tells the (sometimes) horrific fates of disobedient children. He wrote under several pseudonyms, including ÒPolykarpus Gastfenger,Ó ÒHeulalius von Heulenburg,Ó and ÒHeinrich Hoffmann-Donner.Ó King Nut-Cracker was HoffmanÕs second childrenÕs book, written as a follow-up to Der Stuwwelpeter, and his only other work that achieved popularity. Hoffmann also wrote satires and poems (sometimes comedic) for adults, the former revealing his distaste for religious, philosophical, or political bigotry. Quarto. 28; 24 pp. Twenty-eight hand-colored illustrations, including title-page vignette, in Nut-Cracker. Twenty-four illustrated and hand-colored leaves, including title-page illustration, in Struwwelpeter. Text and illustrations printed on rectos only. Rebound at an early period, as is common for this title, in contemporary pebbled cloth over boards with green cloth backstrip, front board lettered in gilt. Binding extremities lightly worn, a bit of soiling to boards. Slight foxing, marginal repair to last leaf in Nutcracker, with loss of a few words and letters. Rubber German export ink stamp, dated 1848, on verso of title-page. Crudely repaired short closed tears to pp. 9-24, at times barely intruding into text, but not affecting legibility. Small booksellerÕs ticket on lower front pastedown. A very good copy. First English edition of King Nut-Cracker bound with an early English edition of Struwwelpeter. The first edition of the first work was published in 1857. The first English edition of Struwwelpeter appeared in 1848.

Octavo, pp. [i-vii] viii [1] 2-280 + 32-page publisher's catalogue dated "1.79" on page [1] inserted at rear, original decorated slate cloth, front and spine panels stamped in black and gold, rear panel stamped in black, top edge untrimmed, black coated endpapers. First edition. Apparently, the first of two books by Dodds, the other a story of small farm life published in 1890. A simplified retelling of English literature from the earliest documents of Old English up to the latter days of Middle English, though curiously silent on the Matter of Britain. Taking into account the author's purpose and the period's conventions, the style of the book is by no means saccharine for an adult reader of today. "Dragons are not pleasant to think about until we come to the part of the story where they are killed; not so with our Fairy Stories, they are always too short" (p. 44). Allibone supplement, p. 497. Gift inscription dated "Easter-tide 1879" on verso of front free endpaper. Cloth rubbed at edges, mostly spine ends, lower corn tips and along outer joints, two small, faint spots to front cover, a tight, clean, very good copy. COPAC reports five copies. (#140671).

Hardcover. Condition: Sehr gut. 1. Auflage. 224 Seiten, 138 Duplex-Abbildungen 24.5 x 30.5 cm - From 2012 to 2014, Swiss photographer and seaman Beat Presser traveled the vast Indonesia archipelago by boat, amassing an extensive collection of photographs that capture the complexity and beauty of life on the country s tens of thousands of islands and the surrounding ocean waters. Surabaya Beat draws on Presser s photographs to reconstruct his travels. Through high winds and heavy storms, he sails as part of the crew aboard traditional Indonesian pinisi, carrying fresh fruit bound for the port cities and the world-famous floating markets while learning from the local seamen about the country through its transport and trade. Along the way, he encounters fellow travelers, from tourists to oil exporters, and even officers of the Coast Guard who lend him a motorcycle and later invite him to join them for a dive.
