Divan Japonais, 1892–93, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec.

As part of its “Louis Daniel Brodsky Collection of Art Nouveau” sale on February 22, Leslie Hindman Auctioneers in Chicago will auction a lithograph of Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec’s Divan Japonais poster. Prints of this image, one of the artist’s most famous works, belong in the collections of the Museum of Modern Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Toulouse-Lautrec was commissioned to create the poster by the owner of the Divan Japonais, a café chantant in Paris’s Montmartre neighborhood. Designed in the popular Japonisme style, the print features three prominent figures of Montmartre nightlife: cancan dancer Jane Avril in the foreground, arts writer Édouard Dujardin beside her, and performer Yvette Guilbert—identified by her signature black gloves—on the stage.
