Björk’s iconic swan dress is getting a London exhibition

Kate Moss’s Union Jack jacket and Rihanna’s massive Molly Goddard gown will also go on show as part of the Design Museum’s London-focused fashion REBEL show

Björk’s 2001 Oscars gown immediately landed the Icelandic singer on countless ‘worst dressed’ lists, because people are largely idiots and hate what they don’t understand: which is, HIGH CONCEPT FASHION, BABY!

The asymmetric white feathered swan look was created by Marjan Pejoski – who later went on to design for London upstarts KTZ – and came with a berserk finishing touch, as Björk brought with her six golden ostrich eggs, which she proceeded to ‘lay’ on her way up the ceremony’s scarlet carpet.

Now, after two appearances as part of exhibitions in New York, the dress is finally making its IRL London debut. Opening on September 16 is REBEL: 30 Years of London Fashion – the Design Museum’s landmark new show dedicated to the BFC’s NEWGEN incubator and those ripping up fashion’s rulebook in the capital.

Spanning game-changing designers and trailblazing artists, the McQueen-supported exhibition will present the very best of British style. But instead of tweed and flat caps and the kind of stuff those words usually conjure up, this is all about the good shit: from custom inflated latex by CSM grad HARRI and the Union Jack jacket Kate Moss wore on the cover of Vogue back in the early 00s, to Steven Stokey Daley’s floral pants, themselves crafted from a chintzy old pair of curtains.

Beyond that, there are few details as to what else to expect right now beyond a handful of names, including Christopher Kane, Wales Bonner, and Craig Green – but as it stands, an up-close look at the swan dress is probably enough to get fashion fans securing tickets long before September rolls around.
