In the 1960s, Varosha, a suburb of Cyprus, was an elite vacation destination that attracted stars such as Elizabeth Taylor and Brigitte Bardot to its pristine beaches and high-rise hotels.
After Turkey invaded the island in 1974, Varosha's 40,000 citizens fled. According to the Daily Mail, residents are still banned from visiting the abandoned resort, which is now blockaded by a fence that extends to the sea.
You won't find many images of Varosha today, but recent drone footage provides a rare glimpse of the ghost town's once-thriving hotels and deserted streets. While the area is currently guarded by Turkish troops, Cyprus recently proposed to reopen Varosha in order to attract tourists. Both Greeks and Turks have expressed interest in reviving the town, but no plans to do so have been publicly announced just yet.
