On our first visit to Portugal back in 2014, immediately stole our hearts. We booked a last-minute weekend away to the northern city of Porto and ever since then, Portugal is a place we can’t stop talking about.
We returned for a 3-week road trip starting in the north, exploring the Peneda-Gerês National Park and following the west coast south passing Aveiro, Nazaré, Peniche, Ericeira, Arrábida Nature Park, the Alentejo coast and Monsaraz. Recently we explored the wonderful coastal town of Cascais, a short drive from the capital Lisbon.
The Atlantic west coast of Portugal is a place with endless beauty, spectacular beaches and beautiful coastal villages such as the charming town of Ericeira.
White-washed buildings, complimented by shades of blue, mirror the surroundings of wonderful Ericeira. Make sure you add Ericeira to your itinerary next time you visit Portugal.

Where is Ericeira?
Once a sleepy fishing village, Ericeira is now also known as a surfing mecca across the world, nestled on the spectacular west coast of Portugal.
Ericeira is found northeast of Lisbon, between Peniche and Cascais and is popular with many visitors, thanks to its stunning coastal views and chill vibe.
Even if you’re not a surfer, Ericeira is a beautiful coastal town in Portugal to visit which offers both adventure and relaxation.
It’s the perfect place to relax on the beach and take a dip in the ocean, from surfing the incredible waves to watching the sunset over the dramatic cliffs.
what is Ericeira known for?
When you visit Ericeira, you’ll be welcomed by friendly locals, discover delicious seafood cuisine and experience authentic Portuguese culture.
Ericeira was designated as the first European World Surfing Reserve which protects the area from development, only recently in 2022, the second European spot was announced as North Devon in the UK.
As a popular surf spot, there are world famous breaks in Ericeira such as Coxos, Foz do Lizandro and Ribeira d’Ilhas.
The town of Ericeira has a charming seaside feel with beautiful cobbled streets and painted houses in shades of blue and white which reflects its surroundings of the Atlantic Ocean and clouds in the sky.
Get lost amongst the narrow streets to discover boutique shops, cafés and seafood restaurants. Don’t miss the incredible views from R. de Santo António and take a seat on one of the many benches to take it all in!
How to get to Ericeira?
By Plane
The nearest airport is Lisbon Airport, also known as Portela or Humberto Delgado Airport which is around 45km away and a 30 minute drive from Ericeira.
Lisbon Airport is well connected to international destinations and is the hub for many budget airlines including easyJet and Ryanair which make it an affordable option.
There are many rental car options to choose from at the airport and taxi services are also available. There is the option to catch a bus from Lisbon Airport to Campo Grande where you can then catch a second bus to Ericeira which takes approximately 2 hours.
By Car
If you’re planning a road trip around Portugal, driving to Ericeira is one of the easiest ways to get there. The journey from Lisbon will take 60 minutes from the city and there are toll booths along this route.
The journey from Lisbon city will take you along the A8 motorway which is a toll road, known in Portuguese as ‘Autoestradas’ and are relatively affordable in comparison to other European toll roads such as France.
Tolls Roads in Portugal
There are two types of toll booths, firstly the traditional tolls have a Via Verde green lane and other lanes showing types of payment by cash and card. The second type are the new electronic toll booths which are automated and unmanned where you will need to pay online.
As you approach a traditional toll booth, you’ll notice there are various signs above each lane indicating the payment method. Do not use the Via Verde which is signposted with green ‘V’ above the lane, unless you have purchased or rented a Via Verde transponder. There are other lanes that show either card or money signs as options to pay at the booth.
The electronic toll sections are shown by a blue sign with a car with beams moving towards it. Electronic tolls only allow you to pay online and it’s worth buying the EASYToll. An EASYToll pass cannot be used for Via Verde or traditional toll booths only new electronic toll routes.
Use the Toll booth simulator on Portugal Toll website to give an estimate on how much the route which cost.
From Peniche the joruney will take 1 hour along the toll route, 49 minutes from Cascais and 30 minutes from Sintra.
By Public Transport
If you’re travelling from Lisbon, there are a few options to get to Ericeira by bus. Firstly, you can catch the metro at the airport or in Lisbon city centre and get off at Campo Grande Station bus terminal where from there you can catch a bus to Ericeira which takes 45 minutes.
Bring cash with you, as many buses do not accept card. Taking the bus is an affordable option as a single journey costs €4.50.
From Lisbon, the bus will arrive at the newly built Ericeira bus terminal Rodoviário which is located 1.5km from the town centre.
Take either the 2126 or 2117 bus which takes you to the northern area of Ericeira or 2125 which takes you to southern part of Ericeira and is the closest to the centre of town.
How to get around Ericeira?
By Car
There are plenty of car parks to choose from; Estacionamento Largo São Sebastião (height barrier), Parque estacionamento R. Bombeiros Voluntários and Sala das Visitas Viewpoint (south of Ericeira town centre).
When driving around Ericeira be prepared for steep hills and narrow streets in places, it is worth checking your route before setting off. We would recommend avoiding driving around the town centre, parking is limited and those car parks suggested above are the best places to park that are close to town with ample space.
By Bus
Getting around Ericeira by bus is easy and an affordable option. It is recommend to carry change with you for the bus as many don’t accept card or may have limited change.
There are buses from Ericeira to Mafra (line 2740), Sintra (line 1633) and Lisbon (mentioned above in how to get to Ericeira by public transport).
Take the Ericeira Beach Bus which travels from Praia Ribera Dilhas in the north to Foz do Lisandro in the south during the summer months (15th June to 15th September). The buses run every hour from 9am till 8pm and there is an real time bus app to track more accurately the bus times.
Each Ericeira Beach Bus has storage for surfboards and is a cheap and easy way to get to the beaches along the coast with ease.
What to take with you when visiting Ericeira?
Depending on what you plan to do in Ericeira, it’s worth taking some comfortable shoes for exploring the town by foot along the cobbled streets.
Whilst visiting Ericeira you’ve got to get yourself into the ocean, make sure you bring some swimwear and a beach towel as you’ll want to explore the many incredible beaches on offer along this beautiful coastline.
Evenings in Ericeira can get relatively cool and it’s worth bringing a cosy jumper to keep you warm.
When is the best time to visit Ericeira?
We visited Ericeira in August, where we experienced a cool breeze and a sea mist which had settled along the coastline, reminding us of Cornwall. As a result of its location along the Atlantic Ocean, the weather can be unpredictable as the ocean temperature stays below 20°C for most of the year.
Summer (July - August) | Some mornings can start foggy with a sea mist and by midday there is usually sunshine in the summer months. Temperatures average 25-30°C which is a perfect temperature with a refreshing Atlantic breeze to keep you cool whilst enjoying the many beautiful beaches.
Spring (April - June) | Mostly sunny days with a chance of rain which means Ericeira comes into bloom with many beautiful flowers. Temperatures start to get warmer in May with an average of 22°C making it a very pleasant time to visit. There are less visitors during this period, especially April and May which allows you to experience it with a much quieter atmosphere.
Autumn (September - November) | This is normally the most popular time for surfing with less winds and clean waves. The temperature reaches a high of 25°C in September and 18°C in November. September and October are a great time to visit with less crowds and warm temperatures, ideal conditions to enjoy the beautiful coastal scenery.
Winter (December - March) | Storms can roll in winter, where the ocean can experience large swells with sunny spells along the way.

relax on a Beautiful golden Sandy Beach
Ericeira is known for its stunning beaches, with dramatic soaring cliffs that frame the coastline, you will find plenty of beaches to choose from.
Soak up the sun and relax on a beach in Ericeira to experience the beautiful west coast of Portugal. Here are some of the best beaches in Ericeira that you must add to your list!
Praia dos Pescadores
This small beach is located in the heart of the historic town of Ericeira. When we visited, the beach was being reconstructed after a storm and has since been restored to its former glory. It’s a great place to surf or relax on for a beach day with great access to nearby amenities in the town such as cafés and restaurants which makes it a family-friendly beach.
Praia do Sul
A golden sandy paradise with crystal-clear water, Praia do Sul is a beautiful spot located south of Ericeira town centre and is easily accessible by foot. If you’re walking from the town centre, make sure to stop at Nalu bowls which is open in the summer serving delicious, fresh smoothie bowls.
Walk up to the Sala das Visitas viewpoint which has panoramic views of Praia do Sul and makes a great sunset spot.
Praia da RiBeira d’Ilhas
A sheltered beach with rolling waves, Ribeira d’Ilhas beach is complimented by rugged cliffs that frame the beach to make it a picture perfect place to also catch some world-class waves.
There is a large car park which allows easy access to the beach year round and is the northernmost beach in Ericeira, holding surf competitions throughout the year.
There is a height barrier at the car park which makes it unsuitable for campervans and motorhomes, however there is parking along the road next to the car park. Make sure to visit the nearby Boardriders skate park and 58 surf shop for a taste of surf and skate culture.
Praia de São Julião
São Julião beach is a quiet escape from the nearby towns and cities and with its expanse of golden, soft sand inviting you to soak up the sun and cool down in the gentle waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
Impressive rock formations can be found nearby, including sandstone cliffs. Follow the path next to the cliff where you can walk up and enjoy the views of the São Julião beach from up high. There are several car parks nearby for easy access to the beach for sunbathers and surfers alike.
discover world class Surf Spots in Ericeira
Ericeira is a surfers paradise, as a recognised World Surf Reserve, there are many incredible surf spots that are on offer. The best time of year to surf along this stretch of coast is in Autumn and Winter months from September to March, as this is when the Atlantic brings in consistent and powerful waves - a surfers dream.
If you’re looking for reliable and consistent waves, head to Praia da Ribeira d’Ilhas. This is perhaps one of the best surf spots in Ericeira, boasting a perfect right-hand point break which is suitable for all levels of ability.
There are multiple surf schools dotted along the coast which make it accessible to all. We’d highly recommend booking a surf lesson if you are trying surfing for the first time or want to increase your confidence in the water.
Other special mentions for great surf spots include; Praia dos Coxos and Foz do Lizandro. Praia dos Coxos has powerful waves which are ideal for experienced surfers, providing a challenging ride whilst trying to avoid rocky outcrops and reef breaks.
Foz do Lizandro is located between Praia de São Julião and Praia do Sul, is suited to all levels of surf. The beach has soft sand and chilled beach breaks which makes it ideal for beginners and can also be enjoyed by intermediate and advanced surfers.

Take a stroll along the cobbled streets of the old town of Ericeira, here you’ll find narrow streets adorned with colourful buildings and beautiful bougainvillea flowers. On Saturday mornings, there is a market which fills the streets selling fresh local produce, souvenirs and handmade crafts.

Sintra
We recently listed this is one of the best places to travel to in 2023, because it truly is a must-see fairy-tale. Once you arrive in Sintra, it feels as though you’ve stepped through the doors of Narnia into an enchanted world with pastel painted houses, majestic palaces and ancient castles.
As a UNESCO World Heritage site, Sintra is surrounded by mountains and in times past seduced wealthy nobles of Portugal to create summer houses to escape the heat and stay cool.
Peniche
This town is a surfers paradise, just north of Ericeira, Peniche is home to a variety of beautiful beaches such as the Praia Baleal which is perfect for surfers of all abilities.
Explore the old town of Peniche, the impressive Fortress of Peniche and take a walk around Baleal for some incredible views of the coastline. Make sure to stop at Waterlost which sells beautiful clothing, prints and also offers surf lessons.
Lisbon
As the capital of Portugal, Lisbon is a vibrant city that effortlessly combines modern living with tradition. A short journey from Ericeira to Lisbon makes it ideal to visit for the day which is best by car or bus.

Alentejo
As one of the largest regions in Portugal, the Alentejo coast has some of the most beautiful beaches which are untouched, remote and breathtaking!

Nazaré
A worthy mention is the well-known Nazaré, home to the biggest surfable waves in the world. Head to the lighthouse where you can enter a museum showcasing surfers holding records for riding the biggest waves and be inspired by their stories.
The geological layout of the seabed in Nazaré creates huge waves, which are best seen in the winter months from October to March.
