Karl Otto Lagerfeld has died aged 85 in Paris today.

He was best known as the creative director of French fashion house Chanel from 1983 until his death on Tuesday, February 19 2019.

He was well recognised for his white hair, black sunglasses and fingerless gloves.

Born in Germany, he was first hired in the fashion capital of Paris as Pierre Balmain's assistant in 1955, before moving to Jean Patou in 1958 where he designed his first collections.

Karl Lagerfeld's weight loss

In 2001, the Chanel designer lost six and a half stone (42kg) in just over a year.

He explained: "Fashion is the best motivation for losing weight."

In November 2000, he decided he was no longer happy with his physique and said to himself: "You work in fashion and fashion means change. If you don't like your image, you only have to change it."

In an interview with The Telegraph he said he started to put on weight in the 70s and after joining Chanel in 1983 he said to himself: 'You would do well to go on a diet', and he went on to lose 15 kilos.

His long-term partner Jacques de Bascher fell ill and died in 1989 of complications relating to HIV, and it was this tragedy that resulted in Lagerfeld piling on weight in grief.

But, believing it to be time for a change in 2001, Lagerfeld lost six and a half stone in 13 months with the help of Dr Jean-Claude Houdret.

What is the Lagerfeld diet?

It is a low-fat, low-calorie plan and makes the body more effective at burning calories.

You can eat fresh fish, white meat, fruits and vegetables, skimmed milk and low-fat spreads.

However, bread, pasta, dried fruit, most cheeses and read meat are banned, as are cherries and grapes.

Karl would drink "litres and litres" of water throughout the day, allowing only tea and coffee but no other drinks.

He would breakfast on two slices of toast with half a grapefruit, adding low-fat yogurt after a few months of the strict plan.

Karl added 15 minutes of weight training to his regime three times a week, and said that was enough to burn calories while not looking too muscular.
