Once a fishing village, the beautiful town of Ericeira today has become of the of the world’s surf capitals. Its coast, considered the first Europe’s surfing reserve and the world’s second one, is a charming succession of cliffs and beaches characterised by a very fine sand, offering the best conditions to practice surf at all levels, from beginners to advanced.
However, you don’t need to be a surfer to fall in love with Ericeira; its narrow streets, the spectacular views on the ocean and its warm atmosphere make it a place capable of enchanting all its visitors.
It can be easily reached from Lisbon on a day trip. Ericeira deserves more time to be fully appreciated. It is perfect as a holiday destination where to enjoy the rhythm of the ocean, or as a stop on a tour around Portugal.
The old town of Ericeira, concentrated around the main square of Praça da República, is not very big and it doesn’t have famous monuments or museums to visit. Ericeira is located 50 kilometers from Lisbon. By renting a car, it can be reached in less than one hour by taking motorway A8. It is harder to get there by public transports, as there are not direct buses or trains.
