Who was Sandro Botticelli?
Sandro Botticelli was an Italian Renaissance artist who lived during the Golden Age of Renaissance painting. Born into a working class family, Botticelli was initially trained as a goldsmith and began apprenticing as a painter around the age of fourteen. Trained by Fra Filippo Lippi, one of the top Florentine painters of the day, Botticelli soon entered into the favor of the powerful Medici family, who would come to be one of the artist’s greatest patrons during his career.
Boticelli’s two greatest masterpieces are The Birth of Venus and Primavera. Both paintings are thought to have been commissioned for the Medici family, who owned the paintings for much of their early life. Both paintings, like all of Boticelli’s work, heavily rely upon allegory. He often used characters from Greco-Roman mythology or Christian ideology, depending on his patron and the occasion for which they had commissioned the painting. In studying his paintings, we may consider the methods by which Renaissance artists attempted to simultaneously evoke ancient mythology, honor contemporary Christian dictums, and pay tribute to their patron. Unsurprisingly, art historians continue to analyze his paintings and come up with new interpretations of his work. In addition to his masterful use of allegory, Boticelli’s paintings are also considered some of the most visually stunning and aesthetically pleasing in existence.
