Robin van Persie scored a late winner and was then sent off as Feyenoord kept pace with second-placed Ajax in the Eredivisie with a stormy 2-1 win over Vitesse.

Van Persie curled home a brilliant free-kick in the 87th minute but later became the third player to be shown a straight red card for a rash challenge on Max Clark.

Vitesse had both Thomas Bruns and Daniljo Doekhi sent off in the second half, having taken a shock 32nd-minute lead through Matus Bero.

Eric Botteghin equalised for Feyenoord two minutes into the second half, while Steven Berghuis also had an effort ruled out by VAR.

Heracles maintained their own strong start to the season as they beat Emmen 2-1 for their fourth straight league win.

The in-form hosts seized control from the start, with Brandley Kuwas prodding them ahead in the sixth minute before Kristoffer Peterson doubled their advantage less than a minute later.

Anco Jansen reduced the deficit through a 68th-minute penalty but it was not enough to prevent the visitors sliding to defeat.
