Your In-depth Guide to Seljalandsfoss Waterfall

Seljalandsfoss

There are over 10 000 waterfalls in Iceland with a few being considered absolute must-visit sites. One of these must-visit falls is Seljalandsfoss and for very good reason. This unique fall offers visitors an experience that no other waterfall here on the island does.

In this article, we will tell you exactly what you can expect from your visit to Seljalandsfoss, how to get there, what’s the best time to visit the falls, what else there is to do and see in the area, and much, much more.

Seljalandsfoss Waterfall; Going Behind the Veil

If waterfalls were movies, Seljalandsfoss would be a look behind the scenes – literally. You see, Seljalandsfoss is also known as “the waterfall you can walk behind”. This couldn’t be more descriptive since Seljalandsfoss gives you the opportunity to walk up to the falls and walk behind the veil of water plummeting to the ground. From here you have an amazing view of the Icelandic landscape, and makes for some pretty interesting and spectacular photos.

Where is Seljalandsfoss in Iceland?

Seljalandsfoss can be found in the south of Iceland and makes the perfect stop along a south coast or Ring Road road trip. Those planning on making a day trip out of their visit to the falls should do it from either Selfoss or Vik since Selfoss is just 71 kilometers from the falls and Vik roughly 60 kilometers. That’s about an hour’s drive from Selfoss and a 50-minute drive from Vik.

How High is Seljalandsfoss Waterfall?

Seljalandsfoss is one of our tallest waterfalls here in Iceland, and clocks in at a staggering 60 meters.

What Does Seljalandsfoss Mean?

The name Seljalandsfoss means ‘selling the land of waterfalls’. And although it’s a pretty good tagline when promoting Iceland, we have no idea where it originated from or when. But when you visit Seljalandsfoss, you definitely understand why this impressive waterfall can serve as sales rep for the country’s waterfall.

What is the Legend of Seljalandsfoss Waterfall?

The legend regarding Seljalandsfoss is actually about its hidden neighbor waterfall, Gljufrabui. This waterfall is hidden away behind cliffs in a small canyon. It is believed that this spot was used by hermits for many years to live in peace in the presence of the beautiful waterfall, and far, far away from people.

How was Seljalandsfoss Formed?

Seljalandsfoss was not so much formed as the landscape around it changed. The 60-meter tall cliffs were once the Icelandic coastline, and the waterfall was once merely another stream running into the North Atlantic Ocean. Seljalandsfoss is the result of all sorts of geological changes and a receding coastline.

When is the Best Time of the Year to Visit Seljalandsfoss Falls in Iceland?

The Seljalandsfoss Waterfall is open to the public all year round, so you’ll be able to visit the falls anytime you’d like. Many would recommend that you visit during the warmer months, but Seljalandsfoss can be a magical experience in the wintertime; a waterfall almost frozen in time with long, icy tentacles draped across the cliffs plunging to the frozen pool below, surrounded by a landscape covered in a thick blanket of snow.

The only drawback during the colder months is weather conditions that might make outdoor activities such as this unpleasant, and the trails and viewing decks can be extremely slippery due to ice.

What is the Best Time of the Day to Visit Seljalandsfoss Falls in Iceland?

There’s no particular time better than another to visit Seljalandsfoss, but if you are planning on visiting during our busy peak season summer months, we highly recommend that you only visit the falls early morning or late afternoon to avoid most of the peak season crowds.

We say hike, but it really is nothing more than a walk on a clearly marked trail that won’t even take you 15 minutes. Just be careful, because it’ll always be slippery irrespective of the season – during the summertime in Iceland the trail is wet and during the wintertime it’s icy.
