Prince Harry said that the moment he saw Meghan Markle, it was love at first sight, puppy Snapchat filter and all.

In the first episode of the royal couple's new Netflix docuseries, Harry & Meghan, the Duke of Sussex revealed that he first saw his future wife in an Instagram post on a mutual friend's account in the summer of 2016. He explained, “Meghan and I met over Instagram. I was scrolling through my feed, and someone who was a friend had this video of the two of them, it was like a Snapchat.” Meghan added, “That whole thing, the dog ears. That's what he saw of me.” But even through that puppy filter, Harry said, “That was the first thing, I was like, ‘Who is that?'”

He then messaged that friend to find out more about this intriguing woman with the dog ears and that friend, in turn, emailed Meghan to let her know that “Prince Haz” had asked about her. And so, the Duchess said, “I asked if I could see his feed. That's the thing, when people say, ‘Did you Google him?’ No, but that's your homework. Let me see what they are about in their feed. Not what someone else says about them, but what they are putting out about themselves.” In the 2020 book Finding Freedom, royal journalists Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand were the first to report that Harry had a private Instagram account that Meghan started following shortly after they met.

In the premiere episode of the docuseries, the Duchess also opened up about their first date, which took place at the Soho House in London. She said that because Harry was so late to meet her she just assumed that he was “one of the guys with so much of an ego that any girl would sit around and wait for a half hour for you.” But as soon as he walked through the door, she realized how wrong she had been as he was “genuinely so embarrassed” about being late.

Later on in the episode, Harry also shared that he knew Meghan was the one because of how many traits she shares with his late mother, Princess Diana. “So much of what Meghan is—and how she is—is so similar to my mom,” he said. “She has the same compassion, she has the same empathy, she has the same confidence. She has this warmth about her.”

In a 2017 interview with Vanity Fair in the early days of their relationship, Meghan shared that it was Harry's unwavering strength that kept her grounded throughout the media frenzy. “It has its challenges, and it comes in waves—some days it can feel more challenging than others,” she said. “And right out of the gate it was surprising the way things changed. But I still have this support system all around me, and, of course, my boyfriend’s support.”
