This beautiful variegated Amaryllis has been in the trade for sometime as Hippeastrum reticulatum var. striatifolium. The true species form is a parent of this hybrid but we believe the majority of the plants sold as H. reticulatum are actually this hybrid or seedlings from it. ‘Mrs Garfield’ is an old hybrid and relatively hard to find. Each leaf is striped with white down the midrib. Unlike its species parent, the hybrid has a much wider stripe and is thankfully easier to grow in the garden. This is primarily a foliage plant though it does have a beautiful flower. The blooming season is actually mid to late summer unlike almost all commercially available hybrids that are spring bloomers. ‘Mrs Garfield’ prefers more shade protection than the full sun loving modern hybrids.
Grows to 18″ in filtered shade to medium sun, hardy in USDA Zones 8 and above.
