    conditions. However, DNA analysis alone is not sufficient to obtain a comprehensive picture of an individual’s metabolism. To achieve this, an understanding of the microbiome is required. The microbiome is a hidden environment that is home to thousands of bacteria.     The power of genetics has taught us that individuals are predisposed to different
    conditions. However, DNA analysis alone is not sufficient to obtain a comprehensive picture of an individual’s metabolism. To achieve this, an understanding of the microbiome is required. The microbiome is a hidden environment that is home to thousands of bacteria. In this project, the concept of using breath analysis to identify traces of the microbiome was explored, thus, an acetone breathalyser was developed.

    By testing this breathalyser, the strong correlation between fat metabolism and acetone was demonstrated. This was later related to DNA proving an intrinsic link between these two. The successful demonstration of this relationship sets the foundations for personalised nutrition.
