Jesus Navas: A long-distance runner

LaLiga Santander Told MARCA he enjoys his new role

Jesus Navas poses for MARCA at Sevilla's training ground

Jesus Navas is a slave to modern football. The winger's qualities are undeniable and with his change of pace and ability to take on an opposing player he has the ability to cause anyone problems and now, he has had to add new dimensions to his game to stay at the top.

Football has changed and teams now play with strikers who operate in new roles and the role of a traditional winger has changed. Such are Navas' traits, that Pep Guardiola identified him as one with the ability to adapt even nearing the age of 30.

Navas returned to Sevilla last year but Eduardo Berizzo could not find space for him in his plans. Vincenzo Montella worked him into the team and under Pablo Machin he is part of a team that suits him perfectly, operating in a deeper position on the wing.

"It's hard to change perspective because I played my whole life there and I'll be happy to do it again," Navas said to MARCA when asked what his career would be like had he changed his position ten years ago.

"I'm comfortable and enjoying my position in the team. I can come from deeper with more of the field to run in to, there is more space and it's important to know when to arrive and be a surprise is key."

Nobody who watched him in his previous spell in Spain is surprised that he is still able to compete at an elite level, but his time in England improved him as a defender.

"The Premier League helped me a lot," he said.

"With Manchester City I played against strong opponents and I knew when to attack and when to not."

Sevilla fell at the hands of city rivals Real Betis before the international break, and while the break has been long according to Navas, he is determined for the side to bounce back with a win this coming weekend.

"We want to give joy to the fans," he added.

"We are only thinking about beating Getafe. Victories always help to get another look at what has happened before and we have started the season well but must continue."
